Pilgrim Psychiatric Center Nurse Stations

Design Brief

Project Location: Brentwood, NY

A|r in collaboration with the NYS Office of General Services and NYS Office of Mental Health is implementing the planning and design to rehabilitate Nurse Stations within 12 active adult inpatient units and 2 swing units at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center.

Recent assessments identified operational inefficiencies and risks driven by evolving clinical needs, reduced staffing levels, and the dispersed nature of key program spaces. Staff frequently move between several remote rooms and support areas, limiting patient observation, slowing communication, and reducing patient and staff safety and capacity for coordinated care, which limits patient observation, slows communication, and reduces patient and staff safety as well as the team’s ability to deliver efficient, coordinated care.

The design reconfigures core program areas to improve visual control, concentrate staff proximity, and streamline clinical workflows, resulting in improved safety for patients and staff. Key enhancements include relocating the Exam Room closer to the Nurse Station to improve oversight and response times; opening enclosed recreation spaces to increase supervision; and optimizing the adjacency and functionality of the Medication Room, Chart Room, and central staff workspace.

Working with OMH and Pilgrim Psychiatric Center staff, A|r developed a reconfiguration that creates a more open, interconnected unit core. The resulting layout improves passive and active supervision, reduces staff isolation, and increases operational efficiency. This modernization strategy provides a unified and flexible staff environment that enhances safety and supports both current operations and future program demands.
