Jackson Square in Batavia by Architectural Resources

Design Brief

Project Location: Batavia, NY

A|r is collaborating with the City of Batavia on a project to enhance Jackson Square to create an engaging public space that promotes arts and culture. This is an important piece of a larger downtown revitalization initiative including a series of strategies to bolster community and cultural amenities.

A new multi-purpose performance stage shaded with a frosted glass and steel canopy will become the focal point of the square, for programmed events and outdoor lounge space, ensuring that Jackson Square can be utilized and enjoyed year-round by all.

The project’s design interventions strive to reveal historical layers of the city while enhancing the outdoor space through progressive and flexible placemaking. Interpretive signage provides insights into the historical layers embedded into the square, using metal castings that create a ‘timeline’ which pays homage to those that occupied the historically recognized sites located on the Square.
