Whiteface Mt. Roundhouse Elevator Modernization Vertical Transportation by Architectural Resources

Design Brief

Project Location: Lake Placid, NY

The A|r team was retained by the NYS Olympic Regional Development Authority to design a solution to replace the Whiteface Mountain Historic Roundhouse Elevator system. With a total travel of over 270 feet through the middle of the mountain, the elevator provides access between the lower parking lot and the summit Roundhouse to offer tourists a 360-degree, panoramic view of the Adirondack Mountains during the late spring and summer months. After nearly 80 years of service, the vintage elevator equipment had become unreliable. Rehabilitation of the system included a modernization of the original 1920’s equipment as well as the stair and associated super-structure that spans the full height of the hoistway.

The design solution includes a glass elevator that recreates the unique sensory experience of travelling through the mountain. The new elevator system is reliable, accessible, code compliant, appropriate to the historic character of the facility and able to withstand the humidity and harsh environment on the mountain This project has been awarded the 2021 “Ellie” Award for Project of the Year.
