South Beach Psychiatric Center

Twenty five years ago Kevin Murrett, President of A|r, embarked on what would become a career-long endeavor to design for supportive needs populations. He has since dedicated his practice and an entire team at A|r to behavioral health design. From renovations to new construction, we combine decades of experience with research-based best practices to deliver safe and effective treatment environments for individuals recovering from mental illness, chemical dependency, and physical disabilities.

South Beach Psychiatric Center is a new, storm-resilient, multi-story residential building on the shores of Staten Island NY. Within the building, 250 adult inpatients and 12 adolescent inpatients may rejuvenate in unique wellness environments, including treatment spaces, education facilities, and outdoor recreation services.

After years of preparation, planning, design, and intense effort, our team is proud to see the new South Beach PC rising on the horizon and shaping into the beautiful care facility so many have envisioned.

Understanding Place

One of the earliest steps in our design process is illustrating the forces that will affect a future design. It is imperative for us to understand how a new project will interact with its surroundings, make us feel, appear throughout the season, and accommodate the needs of future occupants.
